1827 - 1873 THOMAS GILBERT

Born; 18 November 1827, Little Saperton, Heathfield.
Parents; Thomas Gilbert (1791-1851) = Mercy Errey (1802-1851)
Married; Maria Young from Brighton (1829-1905), possibly in December 1848
Children; Esther Ann Gilbert (1850-188?), Henry Thomas John (1853-1931), Lilian [or Lois or Louisa] Rebecca (1858-1932), David (1862-19??).

In the 1851 census Thomas Gilbert, aged 23, servant, born in Heathfield, is shown as living at 1 London Road, Hastings, with his wife Maria and child Esther A.Gilbert, aged one year and born in Heathfield. Head of the household is William Gilbert (b.1823) from Waldron, described in the census as his brother but actually Thomas's cousin William (1823-1874).
By 1858 the family seem to have been in Brighton, as that was where Lilian was born.
At the 1861 Census the family was living at Bethel Chapel, Horley, Thomas (aged 23), Maria (aged 23), Esther A (aged 11), Henry T J (aged 8), Louisa R (aged 3).
By 1863 the family seem to have been in Reigate, Surrey, as that was where David was born.
The 1871 census shows the family living in Reigate, Thomas (aged 42), wife Maria, daughter "Luis R" Gilbert (presumably Lilian - aged 13), and son David (aged 8).

However, in a book about the Errey family by Neil Errey, Bordertown, South Australia, he states that Thomas emigrated to the USA. According to Neil he sought employment in Chicago in the rebuilding of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. Apparently Thomas died of Tuberculosis (10 June 1873) and was buried in Verona, Illinois.
Died; 10 June 1873.

But his family do not seem to have emigrated with him, except perhaps Henry.
The 1881 Census shows Maria Gilbert born Brighton, aged 52, widow, her daughter Esther (aged 30, unmarried), and her son David (aged 18) at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton. Head of household was Walter W. Mathews (relationship of Maria was mother-in-law). Walter was aged 30, married, commercial clerk, born Brighton 1851. His wife is shown as Lilian R. Mathews, aged 23, born 1858, Brighton.

1829 - 1905 MARIA GILBERT (nee YOUNG)

Born; 1829, Brighton.
Married; Thomas Gilbert (1827-1873) possibly at Hailsham in December 1848.
Children; Esther Ann Gilbert (1850-188?), Henry Thomas John (1853-1931), Lilian [or Lois or Louisa] Rebecca (1858-1932), David (1862-19??). Occupation; Servant at 1851 Census.

12 Richmond Terrace was (and still is) an elegant four-storey Regency town house (with basement) overlooking a park (The Level). It sold for £1.1 million in 2010.
In the 1891 census Maria is shown as living at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton as a 'lodging house keeper', aged 62. Other occupants of the house were her daughter Lois with her family (Matthews), and her son David Gilbert.
In the 1901 census there is a Maria Gilbert, aged 72, born in Brighton, living in Brighton, and 'living on own means'.
Died; Brighton towards the end of 1905.

1848 - 1933 AGNES KILBORN GILBERT (nee BALL)

Born; 3 April 1848, Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. One of three sisters.
Parents; ?? Ball = Louisa K Ellis (1823-1905)
Married; Henry Thomas John Gilbert (1852-1931)
Died; 2 June 1933, Los Angeles, Calfornia.
Buried; Riverside Cemetery, Royalton, Morrison County, Minnesota. Plot 58 A 2.

1850 - 188? ESTHER ANN GILBERT

Born; 1850, Little Saperton, Heathfield, Sussex
Parents; Thomas Gilbert (1827-1873) = Maria Young (1829-1905)
Address; 1 London Road, Hastings in 1851, aged 1. (1851 Census)
(An Esther Ann Gilbert was born in Hailsham in March 1850).
In the 1871 census she was recorded as living in Kensington (St.John Paddington), unmarried, aged 21.
Living, unmarried, at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton at the 1881 census, with her brother David, her married sister Lilian Mathews (and Lilian's husband Walter), and her widowed mother Maria.
Not found in the 1891 Census.

1851 - 19?? WALTER WILLIAM MATTHEWS

Born; 1851, Brighton
Married; Lois (Lilian?) Rebecca Gilbert (1858-19??) around 1880.
Children; Walter David Gilbert Matthews (1880-19??), Dougas Gilbert Matthews (1882-??) and Gerard Gilbert Matthews (1882-??) - twins?
In the 1891 Census shown as "Jewellers Manager", Brighton, aged 40, living in the "lodging house" at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton with his mother-in-law Maria Gilbert, his wife Lois (Lilian?) and three children.
In the 1911 Census shown as a "Tramways Clerk, Municipal Service" aged 60.

1853 - 1931 HENRY THOMAS JOHN GILBERT

Born; 18 July 1853, Brighton.

Living with his parents in Surrey, aged 8, at the 1861 Census.
'Joiner' aged 18 in Surrey at the 1871 Census.
Married; Agnes Kilborn Ball (1848-1933).
No trace in the 1881 Census for Sussex or Surrey.
Emigrated to Minnesota and had one daughter.
Died; 9 June 1931, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.
Buried; Riverside Cemetery, Royalton, Morrison County, Minnesota. Plot 58 A 1.

1858 - 1932 LILIAN (or LOIS or LOUISA?) REBECCA MATTHEWS (Nee GILBERT)

At 1861 Census living in Winchester.
At 1871 Census living in Reigate.
Married; Walter W.Matthews (1851-19??), commercial clerk, around 1880.
Children; Walter David Gilbert Matthews (1880-19??), Dougas Gilbert Matthews (1882-??), Rev W Gilbert Mathews (1883-1959) and Gerard Gilbert Mathews (1883-1959) - Twins? Address; 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton in 1881, aged 23 (1881 Census).
Her mother Maria (widowed) her sister Esther Ann (1850-188?) and her brother David (1862-19??) were also living with them.
Still at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton at the 1891 Census, but Esther Ann was no longer present (presumed dead). Also the twins (?) Douglas and Gerard were recorded.
At 1901 Census living in Brighton.
At 1911 Census living in Brighton.
Died; March 1932, Brighton. Probate; 30 July 1932 Brighton.

Living in Reigate with his family at the 1871 Census, aged 8.
Living at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton in 1881, aged 18 at the 1881 Census. His mother (widowed) and his married sister Lois Mathews and her family were also living with them. Occupation shown as 'builder's apprentice'.
Still at 12 Richmond Terrace, Brighton at the 1891 Census, Foreman Carpenter.
Married; Rosina Mabel Farmer (1877=19??) in June 1896 at Steyning.
Living in Brighton at the 1901 Census, aged 38, carpenter.

A Rev.Douglas Gilbert Matthews was rector of Southover, Lewes from 1931 until 1963 when he and his wife retired to Hailsham.
