A book presented to William as a Sunday School prize in 1895 shows that he was attending St.Peter's, Bayswater at that time, the same Sunday School as his future wife, Mabel. He became variously a garage operator, and an insurance salesman.

They had a daughter, Wendy Susan Steadman Hewitt, born in the 1930s. They all lived at 26 Undercliffe Road West, Felixstowe, Suffolk, but did not own it.
He did, however, own 38 Gore Park Road, Eastbourne, in which his real wife and youngest daughter Marjorie were living (the elder daughter Elsie having married and moved elsewhere). In his will dated 1948, and proved in 1972 after his death, he devised that his common-law wife Frances should sell the house and take £500 each for herself and her daughter Wendy. A codicil to the will dated 1958, increased the bequest to Frances to £1000. The remainder of the proceeds of the sale were to be bequeathed to his real wife.
This led to a panic in Eastbourne, while his daughter Marjorie made frantic efforts to raise the £1500 necessary to buy out the other two beneficiaries, and avoid having to sell the house.
