Parents; Thomas Gilbert (1791-1851) = Mercy Errey (1802-1851)
Living at Little Saperton, Old Heathfield, Sussex at the 1841 census, aged 9.
There is a suggestion that he emigrated to the USA in 1849 (possibly with his brother Jabez), some 2 years before the rest of his family.

Married; Sara Carrick (1835-1917) of Buffalo, New York in 1863.
Children; Mary Carrick (1863-1944), Thomas J. (1865-1944), Gertie Jennie (1867-1956), Sarah Jane (1868-??), Charles E (1868-1868), Charles (1869-1870), William J (1871-1871), Hattie (1872-??), Miriam Elsie (1873-1955), Augusta M. (1875-1934), David G (1877-1878).
Lived in Mazon, Illinois.
Died; 1 September 1908, Illinois.
Buried; Ward Cemetery, Verona, Illinois.

Betty Jo Griffith in the USA sent the following obituary she found in June 1999; "George L.Gilbert was born in Sussex, England, January 31, 1832, and died September 1, 1908, aged 76 years, 7 months. He came to America at the age of 17 years, stopping at Buffalo, N.Y. for some time. From there he came to Illinois, finally settling in Grundy County. He was united in marriage to Sarah Carrick in 1863. To this union was born ten children, five of whom preceded him in death. Those living are Mrs Mary Gillett of Holtville, Cal; Thos.J.Gilbert of Mazon, Illinois, Mrs Jennie Ash of Dwight, Il., Mrs Miriam Kerns of Glendale Arizona, and Miss Augusta, who lives at home. These, with the aged widow are left to mourn. Mr Gilbert has been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for over 50 years living the life professed and beloved by all who knew him."
This suggests that he emigrated in 1849 (possibly with his brother Jabez), some 2 years before the rest of his family.

1863 - 1944 MARY CARRICK GILLETT (nee GILBERT)

Born; 15 December 1863, Mazon, Illinois.
Parents; George Linman Gilbert (1832-1908) = Sarah Carrick (1835-1917)
Married; Willard Franklin Gillett (2 October 1862, Kalamazoo, Michigan - 3 July 1951, California) on 16 May 1883, Grundy, Illinois.

Children; nine;
(i) Mary Agusta (16 July 1884, Greenwood, Kansas - 30 June 1907, Imperial, California), married Charles Tolle in 1906, one daughter, Lena Viola Agusta. Mary is buried in the Imperial Historic Cemetery.
(ii) John Thomas Gillett (2 July 1886, Greenwood, Kansas - 1948), married Maggie May Brown in 1912, six children.
(iii) Harriet "Hattie" Ann Gillett (3 January 1888, Meade, Kansas - 1969), married Herbert Underwood - see below for details.
(iv) Sarah Alice Gillett (16 or 18 April 1891, Pulaski Co., Missouri - 1966), married Arthur Bickett in 1922 at Holtville, California. Four children.
(v) Charles Edwin Gillett (21 February 1894, Maricopa Co., Arizona - 1982), married Gladys Alma Craig in 1925 in Colorado City. One daughter, Lucille.
(vi) Bertha Jane Gillett (2 or 21 December 1895, Maricope Co., Arizona - 1992), married Joseph Willard Campbell in 1912, Imperial County, eight children.
(vii) Elsie Maude Gillett (20 April 1898, Maricopa Co., Arizona - 1993), married Frederic A Jensen in 1923 in Los Angeles. One daughter Patricia.
(viii) Gilbert Willard Gillett (10 December 1902, Imperial County - 1984), married Olive Keeble in 1927. Two children, Garland Eugene and Marylin Louise.
(ix) Jesse Franklin Gillett (19 January 1906, Imperial County - 1992), married Beatrice Cook in 1927. Three children, Carolyn, Barbnara and Don Lee.

The family were early settlers in Imperial Valley, California, Later moving to Hawthorne.
At the 1940 Census living at 7211 Budlong, Los Angeles, California.
Died; 10 January 1944, California.
Buried; Inglewood Cemetery, Los Angeles.

Married; Edward Philip Ash (born 1870 Verona, Illinois - died 1947, Verona, Illinois) as his 2nd wife, around 1900.
Lived at Dwight (and/or Mazon), Illinois.
Children;
(i) George P. Ash (1900 Verona - 1930 Verona), buried in Ward Cemetery, Verona.
(ii) Corah or Cara (1902 - 1962 Stillman Valley, Illinois), married Roy Swart, daughter named June.
(iii) Howard (born before 1910, died North Vernon, Indiana). Married Helen Beck.
(iv) Gilbert (1906 Verona - 1970 Verona)

Martha Harman Ash sent the following details about Philip in July 1999;
"Jennie's husband, Edward Philip Ash, was the son of Philip Ash, born 14 July 1837 in Hessen, Germany. He was one of four children, George A. (b.1863), Mary Isabelle (b.1864), Edward Philip (b.1870 in Verona, Illinois), and Charles Wesley (b.1879). Edward was married twice, the first time to a Shawnee Indian, who died giving birth to his first son Roy in 1894. Little is known about this first wife. The Grundy County News (Illinois) then listed Edward as filing for a licence to marry Jennie Gilbert of Verona, Illinois on 28 Dec 1899. It is therefore supposed that he married her sometime in early 1900."
Martha also sent me the following about Jennie's son Gilbert Ash;
"Gilbert, or 'Gib' as he was known, was the last Ash to live on family land. He was extremely friendly and one neighbor that we met described Gib as 'someone who never met anyone who was a stranger'. He was a bachelor farmer and a bit of a character."
