1863 - 1943 HENRY "HARRY" MORRIS

Born; 11 August 1863, 66 Seaside Road (formerly 1 Victoria Place), Eastbourne, the Morris ironmongers shop and house.
Parents; James Berry Morris (1828-1901) = Mary Sophia Wille (1831-1916)
At the 1881 Census Henry was shown as aged 17, unmarried, ironmongers assistant, living at 66/67 Seaside Road, Eastbourne.

Married; Martha Edith Jinman (1863-1940) on 3 May 1893 at Trinity Church, Eastbourne.
Children; Harold Henry (1894-1917?), Hilda (1899-19??), Arthur Wellesley (1903-1982)
Involved with local politics and the militia. When Admiral Field won the poll for the Eastbourne Division by a majority of 60 on 23 July 1895, Harry rode in the carriage with Field in the evening procession.

From Robert Morris's diary (Uckfield);
15 July 1899; "H.R.H. the Prince of Wales arrived this evening, about 7 p.m. Corpl. H.Morris on the guard of honour."
26 March 1900; "Harry left at 11.45 for Eastbourne. He has decided to become a Sergt. in the 2nd Sx.V.A. and is learning to ride horseback."
3 September 1901; "Received postcard from Harry informing me of the death of his brother in law George Jinman. He died early Saturday morning 31st ult."

Brothers James, Reginald and Henry progressively took over the family iron foundry business from their father during the 1880s and 1890s.

Around 1901 James Berry Morris's sons Henry and Reginald came to live at the Eastbourne shop in Seaside Road with their families while James (junior) continued to live at 15 Gorringe Road.

12 January 1903; "Mr.Henry Morris was delivered of a son at 7.30 pm on Sat (10th inst.)."
15 January 1903; "Received a letter from Harry. His little girl, Hilda, is very ill with pleurisy and a weak heart. Doubtful if she will recover."
19 January 1903; "Hilda is very unwell, water in lung."
29 January 1903; "Harry's mother-in-law, Mrs. Jinman, is dead - consumption."
11 May 1905; "Received postcard from Harry. His boy Arthur has had a marvellous escape. The gas cooker stove exploded without doing him any harm."
27 December 1905; "James, Chub, Reg and Frank arrived this morning having walked from Isfield. Harry unable to leave home owing to illness of his youngest child."
28 September 1906; "Harry is at present staying with Chub at Hove."
2 July 1908; "Harry is serving on the Petty jury at Lewes Assizes yesterday and today."
4 July 1908; "Received post card from Harry, who had just finished up at Lewes Assizes at 7.15 pm yesterday."
15 September 1909; "Harry arrived at 10:30 am with Hilda & Arthur, left at 8 pm."

11 August 1910; "Harry's birthday 1863."
13 October 1910; "Harry arrived with Hilda & Arthur this afternoon. They left at 8pm for Eastbourne."
28 December 1910; "James & Harry arrived at 10 am, & Frank came later, on bicycle, from Horeham Road. Spent very pleasant day. James, Chub & Harry left at 8 pm, Frank sleeps here tonight."
17 March 1911; "Received postcard from Harry - his wife has had a fall, tripping over the hearthrug and falling into the grate - happily no fire in it."
20 September 1911; "Harry, Mrs. and Arthur arrived at 10 am. and left again for Eastbourne at 8 pm."
18 October 1911; "James and Harry here to see about business."
9 April 1912; "Harry to see South Street Cottages, Lewes, this morning."
27 November 1912; "Harry arrived this afternoon, took tea, & left for Eastbourne at 8 pm."
30 April 1913; "Mr.A.Jinman is buried at Eastbourne, I believe, this afternoon. He was churchwarden at Trinity for over 30 years."
2 May 1913; "Harry arrived at 10 am and left at 8 pm. He came to see about Frank's affairs."
3 May 1913; "Harry arrived at 1 pm and left at 8 pm. He saw Mr.Vinall this morning about Frank's affairs."
9 May 1913; "M.S.M. received a straight letter from Harry re Frank's affairs."
11 August 1913; "Harry's birthday. He must be 50."
1 October 1913; "Harry, Mrs., & Hilda & Arthur spent the day here."
8 October 1913; "Did an enlarged drawing of Exceat church from the survey of 1587 for Richard {Gilbert}, and continued watercolour of Paradise Wood for Harry."
9 October 1911; "Finished water colour for Harry."
10 October 1913; "Sent off water colour - Paradise Wood - to Harry."
27 December 1913; "James, Herbert & Harry spent the day here. The two former walked from Lewes, & Harry took train at Barcombe."
14 October 1914; "A post card from Harry this evening informs me that the Field Battery to which Harold belongs, at present at Sheerness, is ordered to India on the 25th."
28 December 1914; "James, Herbert and Harry spent the day here. Harry has spent Christmas at Berwick, and had to leave at 6.15 pm."

When Henry Morris retired from the business on 30 June 1933, aged 70, he represented the last of the Morrises to be connected with the firm, and it was continued by George Pettitt, formerly the foreman and with whom Henry had entered into partnership.

Died; 11 September 1943, aged 80, probably in Hailsham.

5 October 1897; "Harold visited 66 & 67 in his knickerbockers. 1st time." (66-67 Seaside Road, Eastbourne, the Morris Ironmongers shop)
24 February 1909; "Received letter from Harry - Harold is not at all well."
3 March 1909; "Harold has pleurisy"
10 March 1909; "Harold is better"
5 August 1914; "The Territorials and Reserves are up. Harold has gone to Canterbury - he is in the 2nd Home Counties Artillery. I am expecting disasters. Tonight we hear that fighting has already taken place in Belgium, and that heavy firing has been heard at Dover."
14 October 1914; "A post card from Harry this evening informs me that the Field Battery to which Harold belongs, at present at Sheerness, is ordered to India on the 25th."
29 December 1914; "Mother received Xmas card from Harold at Bombay."
1 January 1915; "We received Xmas card from Harold - Calaba, India. It is a photo of himself in uniform. I only trust he will return home again in safety."

In 1974 Arthur was living at 10 Ditchling Way, Hailsham, East Sussex. Died; 25 July 1982.
An obituary notice in the Eastbourne Gazette for 28 July 1982 read; "MORRIS - On July 25 at Gloucester Royal Hospital. Arthur Wellesley, aged 79 years, of Mayfield Drive, Hucclecote (formerly of Ditchling Way, Hailsham, Sussex). Dearly loved husband of Winifred, dear father of Colin and much loved grandfather of Susan. Funeral service and cremation at Gloucester Crematorium on Friday July 30 at 12.30 p.m."
